FAQ
Question: I am looking for a specific archive (for example, that of the Estonian Society in a specific city) but I just don’t know where to begin. What should I do?
Answer: It all depends on where this archive is being held, if it’s in Estonia or Sweden, etc. The Baltic Heritage Network has a good overview of Estonian archives and databases here: http://www.balther.net/10547/ (click your way to the English version).
For archives in Sweden the easiest way is to use the National Archives' database NAD, Nationell Arkivdatabas: http://nad.ra.se/
You can always contact the archival institutions by e-mail If you still can’t find what you’re looking for or if you have more questions regarding a certain archive.
Unfortunately, not all archives have been preserved - some never make it to the archival institutions but rather end up in the hands of people who don’t think they have any value, and they end up at the rubbish tip instead.
Good luck!
